Susan McGalla on How Women Can Succeed in the Workplace

Despite the remarkable progress that’s been achieved for women in the workplace over the past forty years, many barriers still remain. Women still earn only 77 cents for every dollar that a man earns, and even less if they’re a minority.

Part of this gap has to do with the job choices men and women make: many of the popular career choices men make pay more than the jobs women choose to take, like being a nurse or school teacher. In addition, while women’s earnings may initially outpace men’s earnings after college, this slows once they hit 30, when many college-educated women typically start having children.

There’s plenty of advice out there about how women can overcome workplace discrimination and earn more, like in Lean In, by Sheryl Sandberg. But in a press release originally reported on PR Newswire, Susan McGalla, the founder of P3 Executive Consulting, LLC, talks about concrete steps women can take to advance their careers.  Check this on Ireport.cnn.com

“Women make up almost half of the professional workers in the United Stated and it is important to continue those efforts of growth,” McGalla says. “In order to succeed in a male-dominated workplace, the number of university educated women needs to increase in this skill-dependent economy.”

For some women, the cost of higher education may be prohibitively expensive; McGalla recommends making smart choices about financial aid and scholarships to make it more achievable.
