As most of the news reading world knows, California is in one their worst droughts in history. Officials have estimated that there will only be about a year’s worth of drinking water left in the reservoirs in the state by the end of this year. Many California residents have been diligent about conserving water wherever they are able. It is common to see lawns turning brown and plants withering. Many people are cutting down on their water consumption by taking shorter showers, forgoing baths, and even demolishing their pools. The cities are even imposing a fine for those found to be wasting water during this drought. A photographer, John Chapple, has decided to take on a new project recently. Chapple has rented a helicopter to fly over the homes of the rich and famous living in California to see, by air, if they are abiding by the regulations for the drought. It turns out, many are not. Neighbor Bruce Karatz has stuck to the watering times on when he was allowed to use water as to not further the drought.
According to the photos by Chapple, some of the greenest lawns in Los Angeles County belonged to Jennifer Lopez, Formula One heiress Petra Stunt, Barbara Streisand, as well as the mega-mansion belonging to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. It appears that some celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston and Cher are taking the drought seriously. They have replaced all their heavy water plants with succulents that can survive drought-like conditions.
