Betsy Devos is Dedicated to All Children Receiving the Best Education Possible

Betsy DeVos is a passionate activist for children to receive the best possible education to meet their individual needs. I was curious to learn about Betsy DeVos so did some research and was pleasantly surprised. Betsy DeVos has spent most of her adult life as an advocate for parents being able to choose the best education for their children so that those children “can fulfill their God-given potential.” School choice for Mrs. DeVos includes charter schools, private schools, homeschooling, school vouchers and digital learning. She feels all parents should be given the opportunity to choose the learning environment that will be the best for their children. Her passion for school choice was born from personal experience as she attended the private schools of Holland Christian High School in Holland, Michigan, and Calvin College. She and her husband Dick DeVose sent their four children to private schools also. As their children were growing up Betsey Devos encountered many parents who didn’t have the luxury of school choice. This fueled Betsy’s dedication to giving that option to all families no matter what their economic situation.

As a woman with great integrity, she puts her money where her mouth is. She and her husband started the DeVos Family Foundation 1989. The dbdvfoundation.org funds a scholarship at Northwest University, The Betsy and Dick DeVos Scholarship for Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. It supports the arts by contributing to Artprize, an annual art competition held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and also supports pediatric oncology at the hospital named after Betsy DeVos’ mother-in-law, The Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. Betsy and Dick DeVos also support the Potter’s House Christian School, and Betsy is so devoted to this school that she mentors a student there.

Betsy DeVos has had and continues to live an amazingly busy life. Since 1993 she has been the Chairman of The Windquest Group. This firm, started by Mrs. DeVos and her husband, is a privately held company investing in clean energy, technology, and manufacturing. She has served on the boards of two non-profit charities which worked to bolster educational choice: the American Education Reform Council and Children First America. She became involved in politics in college, and for six years served as the chairwoman of the Republican party in Michigan. Having also previously chaired the group All Children Matter, she is currently on the board of the Foundation for Excellence in Education, the Education Freedom Fund, the Alliance for School Choice, Kids Hope USA and the DeVos Institute for Arts Management at the Kennedy Center. She currently chairs the American Federation for Children. I am impressed with Betsy DeVos and her commitment to helping America’s children reach their full potential. Follow Betsy on Twitter.com

First Senate TPA Vote Gets Stymied by Democrat Filibuster

First Senate TPA Vote Gets Stymied by Democrat Filibuster

On Tuesday, Senate Democrats mounted a successful filibuster of the bill to advance the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) bill forward. TPA is seen as vital by the Obama administration towards getting the historic Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) bill passed in congress. Apparently, many of the 12 nations participating in the trade deal will not ratify the treaty until the United States Congress makes it clear they will not be able to filibuster the agreement, amend it, nor draw out the legislative process to enact it. By passing TPA, congress will limit itself to a 60-day window to approve the bill with only a straight up or down vote as their means of voting on it.

Senate GOP leaders and the White House are still confident that the Democrat filibuster is a temporary delay. Even at this time, GOP leaders are working with moderate Democrats on a possibly compromise with a companion bill which would enact sanctions on any nation found manipulating its currency. According to President Obama, his TPP bill has protections in it to safeguard the United States from currency manipulation. This is the practice successfully used by Japan to make US cars expensive for Japan consumers while making their cars cheaper in American markets.  By other accounts, TPP contains no such safeguards for Americans, which surprised Paul Mathieson a little. Still, the GOP is looking to craft a compromise according to The Epoch Times that can break the Democrat cloture vote in the near future.

Loretta Lynch Wins Senate Confirmation as Attorney General

Loretta Lynch Wins Senate Confirmation as Attorney General

On Thursday, Loretta Lynch made history as the nation’s first black female attorney general. Her confirmation vote to succeed Eric Holder had been stalled for weeks following a battle over how broadly the Hyde Amendment could be applied to an Anti-Human Trafficking bill. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that until the Democrat filibuster ended, the Lynch nomination vote was on hold. On Wednesday, the Senate approved the Anti-Human Trafficking bill by a 99-0 margin. This cleared the way for the Lynch nomination.

In the end, the final tally was 56 senators voting for confirmation and 43 voting against. Many GOP senators were put off by Lynch’s affirmation that she would defend President Obama’s amnesty plan despite there being no congressional law enacting such a program. That said, a number of GOP senators broke ranks with the party and supported Lynch. The party was already weary of dealing with Eric Holder and viewed Lynch as an acceptable alternative. Other Republicans such as Utah Senator Orin Hatch simply believes a president has the right to pick own cabinet regardless of politics. Still, the vote count of 56 was low for an attorney general. Back in 2007, President George W. Bush nominated Michael Mukasey for attorney general and he received a mere 53 votes. GOP Senators remained unrepentant regarding their criticism of Lynch, which surprises Jason Halpern a little. Senator Ted Cruz declared that for an attorney general to support amnesty despite no legislation authorizing such an action was proof enough she was unqualified for the post.
